Read Aloud, Read Along For Teachers and Librarians From Johanna Hurwitz: " A few years ago I read a news article in The New York Times about some guinea pigs that were abandoned in Central Park. I decided to write about one guinea pig (PeeWee) and how he managed to survive. Since he'd always lived in a cage in the past, I decided the guinea pig needed a friend to help him out. I immediately thought it should be a squirrel. There may not be many guinea pigs in the park, but everyone knows there are loads of squirrels. Furthermore, squirrels have lots of street smarts. I named the squirrel "Lexi" after Lexington Avenue." Activity : Writers' Workshop: Ideas Stories are Everywhere
