Read Aloud and Read Along

For Teachers and Librarians

Try this book for a story hour at the start of a food unit.  Combine food stories with a math graphing exercise.

  • Choose a number of food stories to read over the length of the unit.  Make a graph with chart paper that includes all of the food groups (don't forget to include an "other" category).
  • For each story read, ask children to place the names (or pictures) of the foods mentioned in the story in the right category on the graph.
  • With two different colored stickers or crayons, ask each children to mark on the graph whether they like that food or not.  (See chart at right.)
  • At the end of the unit, find a simple way to serve several favorite foods of the group.

Beware of the Storybook Wolves by Lauren Child

For Students

Now here is a book to read alone! Want to know what happened to Herb one night? Two wolves escaped from his fairy tale book and threatened to eat him. What could Herb do? He turned to his book and asked for the help of Cinderella's fairy godmother. What would you do?

  • Write your own story of a "lost" fairytale character.
  • On separate pieces of paper write down a list of all the fairy tale characters you can think of. Fold the papers and put them in a small container.  Draw three from the container and make up a story using these three characters.
  • Illustrate your story.
